October 2009 > Organic Takeover cyclists bring message to FOG volunteers, GIFT Gardeners

Organic TakeoverVolunteers who have assisted with Florida Organic Grower's GIFT Gardens project and the project's recipients gathered at Gainesville's Kanapaha Botanical Gardens Sunday, Sept. 20 for an appreciation event and gardening workshop. They also received some encouragement from a group of cyclists making their way across Florida conducting "Organic Takeovers."

Organic Takeover The four cyclists, called Be Organic, are African American chefs who discovered that combining an active lifestyle with healthy eating, including an increase in organic food, made them healthier, got them off prescription medications and gave them the motivation to share their story with others. They began their journey Sept. 2, and were in Gainesville following a trip to Florida A&M in Tallahassee. They spoke to FOG volunteers and GIFT Garden recipients following a gardening workshop led by IFAS Extension Environmental Horticulture Agent Wendy Wilber, who offered attendees some valuable tips on starting their fall gardens. Volunteers and GIFT Gardeners also received generous gifts donated by various businesses in Alachua County.
