January 2010 > Planning committees continue meeting for community food planning project

GIFTCommittees discussing various aspects of Gainesville's food system, from nutrition education to getting healthier food into local schools, met in December and will continue meeting in January as part of a Community Food Planning Project working toward development of a Local Food Action Plan. Florida Organic Growers (FOG) received a USDA Community Food Planning Grant in spring 2009 to support the project, which will assist in ensuring that future efforts to improve Gainesville's food security address issues of concern to Gainesville residents with low incomes.

Four focused community food planning committees have been established to discuss the food system as it relates to gardening, farms, education and farm to institution. Policies limiting Gainesville residents' abilities to produce and consume local foods are also being addressed.
