USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) has allocated $50 million to the Organic Initiative for 2010, which will again be administered through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP). The organic initiative within the EQIP offers a significant opportunity for organic and transitioning organic growers to receive financial assistance in implementing conservation practices as part of their Organic Systems Plan or Organic Transitions Plan. In addition, EQIP will fund construction of one high tunnel per farm in 40 states including Florida as part of a 3-year study on the use of high tunnels to extend the growing season.
Producers are encouraged to contact the organic program point of contact in their state NRCS office or local offices/contacts as soon as possible to begin the application process. Deadline for applications is March 12, 2010. For more information visit the ATTRA Guide to Accessing the Environmental Quality Incentive Program (EQIP) Organic Initiative for Conversion or Expansion.
