August 2009 > Food safety policy update

The House of Representatives passed the Food Safety Enhancement Act (HR 2749) July 30, 2009. It is not expected to be discussed by the Senate until September, at the earliest. FOG will continue to monitor the legislative process and work with and support other groups, including the OTA, NSAC, MOFGA, and PASA. The goal remains the same: risk-appropriate and size-appropriate legislation that does not hinder or duplicate already existing agricultural, environmental or conservation legislation and includes, explicitly, diverse agricultural systems in research and education.

Legislators need to hear the interests of small, organic or other non-conventional producers and farmers. Please use the links below to find your representative and call or write them. Let them know you want size appropriate fees. Finally, let them know you don’t want to duplicate efforts already in place under the National Organic Program in the Farm Bill.
