FOG participated in the development of the Domestic Fair Trade Association and is an active participant in the coalition of organizations working for health, justice and sustainability, and united around the Principles of Domestic Fair Trade:
• family scale farming;
• capacity building for producers and workers;
• democratic and participatory ownership and control;
• ensuring rights of those who labor in the agricultural system;
• equality empowerment of women, minorities, indigenous peoples and other marginalized members of society to represent their own interests, participate directly in trade, and to share in its economic benefits;
• direct trade;
• fair and stable pricing;
• shared risk and affordable credit;
• long-term trade relationships;
• sustainable agriculture;
• use of traditional and safe technologies, which are openly and freely shared in the public domain, and excludes plants and animals, and biological processes, which have been genetically engineered or modified;
• indigenous peoples’ rights to land for cultivation, fishing, and hunting and gathering in customary and traditional ways; and
• transparency and accountability of costs and pricing structures, education, and advocacy throughout the agricultural chain.
